Well, you just knew that Peter Jackson’s version of The Hobbit was destined to stir up some controversy.
Last week, I posted some tidbits about the rumored “romantic feelings” the Dwarf Fili has for the Elf Tauriel. (See Interracial Romance in Jackson’s Hobbit?) Since then, some comments by Billy Connolly, who plays the dwarf warrior Dain Ironfoot, have also raised a few eyebrows among Tolkien fans. The descriptions he has given of his character make him appear like a biker dude on a hog… and I’m talking a literal pig.
Connolly told Yahoo! Australia Dain will have “have a Mohawk and tattoos on [his] head,” and Australia’s News.com he will “arrive riding a wild pig.”
Is this Jackson attempt to incorporate “whimsy” into the Hobbit movies?
As a recent article on TheOneRing.net points out, Tolkien never gives a description of Dain: “His appearance is left wholly to the imagination of the reader.”
How does Jackson’s imagination square with yours? Or is Connolly feeding us a line to stir up interest? What do you think? Please share your thoughts below.
