Seeking a Friend for the End of the World
Scratch a Niche
Clever Writing, Interesting Premise

Steve Carell is making a career of playing the understated guy while the world ends around him, and this time it really is. Understated characters fit him well while the drama and chaos swirl around him… but is that interesting any more?

This is a terrible and flip review. On a website that tries to look at pop culture from a religious point of view, what is the point of making your review of a movie with overt theological themes a snarky one-line throwaway comment about how one of the characters had played this personality before? Who cares? Save the sophomoric critiques of the actors for another webpage. Tell me something about how the movie deals with the end of life. Tell me about what it says about what to take with you when you know you are going to die. Tell me about how some people line up to have sex with strangers and some go to the sea to be baptised. Tell me something about the movie!!!

Stan. I appreciate your honest critique of my critique :) After re-watching I have to admit you make a valid point. Usually I at least make passing mentions of themes that meant something to me or might mean something to you. With this film for whatever reason the main things that stood out to me were Carrel’s understated but wonderful performance, the way forcing and focusing on a love story affected the story buy-in, and some clever writing and plotting. I try to do my video reviews as a friend talking to a friend. Of course in a normal friend conversation, there would be time for back and forth but sometimes I miss aspects that might be important to the viewer. In this case I failed to touch on an aspect that would likely be important to many viewers and that’s on me. Each day I try to do better, hopefully in the last 6 months I’ve upped my skills a bit :)
