Jiro Dreams of Sushi is the 2011 documentary about a famous Japanese sushi chef named Jiro. The movie is about Jiro’s legacy, his drive and determination, and it’s about him passing on his legacy to his eldest son.
Jiro is a well known sushi chef in Japan. The movie shows how hard he’s worked just to get to the top and how much respect he’s gotten. The movie also shows the great pride that he takes in his work and how his employees feel working for him.
I had some sushi before I watched this, so I thought that I’d be in the clear. That wasn’t the case, though. When I saw the artistic and beautiful shots of delicious sushi, I wanted some again! But, I didn’t want just any sushi, I wanted Jiro’s sushi!
The thing is though, the movie isn’t all about sushi; it’s about how one man’s hard work and self discipline have paid off after all these years. Jiro is a man who loves what he does and is more than thankful to be working in the field that he loves so much. That is very inspiring.
I’ll admit, the movie did seem to kind of wander off a little when they would go out and buy food for their restaurant, but it did pick back up again. I very much enjoyed Jiro’s story and learning about what makes a piece of sushi so good.
Jiro said in the beginning of the movie that you have to love what you do and dedicate your life to it. He also said to never complain. He’s right. I absolutely love writing for this website and I only want to get better at it. It’s a great gift from God, just like Jiro’s gift is being a sushi chef.
It may take you a long time to find what you want to do. It may take you years and years. But once you find it, never take it for granted. Never settle for mediocrity. Always do the very best that you can. Remember, when you only give half, you will only get half back.
We should all thank the Father, for the wonderful gifts that He has given us. Whether it’s being a writer, actor, stay-at-home parent, CEO, or a sushi chef, we should always thank Him and ask Him to please help us always do our very best and to always remember that it was Him that gave us these blessings.
