Yesterday afternoon was a revolutionary experience in my life.
I got the call.
Not a casting call or a call to arms, but the call from Gamestop informing me of Monday night’s launch party for Grand Theft Auto IV. We are mere days away from one of the biggest video game events in history. GTA IV has the potential to shatter sales records across the board and will probably do just that. PS3 and Xbox360 owners across America will spread chaos and destruction in what IGN has called “the best game since Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.”
So where does that leave Christan video gamers? Do we refuse to indulge? Do we boycott? Do we play it until our eyes bleed and love every minute? All this week we will tackle these important questions. We have a great opportunity to discuss the explosion of video games in pop culture, and approach these issues from a spiritual perspective. Make no mistake about it, GTA IV and its vaunted multiplayer elements could very well revolutionize console gaming. Instead of sitting on the sidelines, we’ll be bringing you the good, the bad, and the ugly from Liberty City all week long.

Regardless of how one feels about the GTA franchise, there’s no denying the effect it’s had on the gaming industry. If Rockstar is to believed, the reason they named this one GTA IV is because like GTA III, this is the next big leap in game design and technology. We’ll find out this week if those claims are true, and once again I’m sure we’ll hear more about how violent games cause violent behavior and how another GTA is going to bring the downfall of society.
