Over A Million Welcome Kinect Into Their Home

While it seemed a little quiet after the release of Move, it was several weeks before we started hearing sales results, Microsoft was quick to announce just how well Kinect has done in its first ten days on the shelf.

Just over a million units have sold thus far, and Microsoft is optimistic that they can get five million sold by the end of the year. In fact, they’re investing $500 million in a media blitz to make sure they reach that number. Microsoft is serious about making Kinect work, but we’ll see if consumers continue to be as eager to welcome Kinect in their home.

Perhaps the biggest speed bump on the road to success for Kinect is the lack of any real core games. Obviously Microsoft wants the casual, family friendly crowd that’s been swarming all over the Wii, but a large percent of their current install base are core gamers. Without any software to entice them to jump on board, Microsoft has to count on new gamers who potentially will need to pick the console and Kinect, which is pricey. Still, that may work in the short-term, but down the road they’ll have to get the core gamers involved if they really want to make Kinect a big success.
