Day 5: Unrecognized and Misunderstood
Frustrations with a Virtual Exercise World

Today was Day 5 of my experiment to see if I can lose 7 pounds by mid-January by completing the 90-day EA Sports Active challenge, and boy was it a frustrating one!  Not because it was a difficult workout-it wasn’t-but because of problems I had with Xbox Kinect.

Several times in my workout today I had problems either being recognized by Kinect (imagine having to stop working out repeatedly and being told to stand still in order to let Kinect figure out who you are before you can continue) or Kinect had trouble following my movements. I’ve had trouble with this all along with the exercises on the ground, but this time I even had problems with several of the regular ones.  I’m hoping this gets resolved soon.  Today I was frustrated enough to consider quitting the whole challenge and going back to my exercise DVDs.

As for the parts of my EA Sports Active workout that did work properly, there were some interesting new cardio exercises that were introduced today, including a step aerobic routine.  The workout today was more focused on the upper body so there weren’t as many lower body exercises, which was a relief because I still haven’t completely recovered from the soreness that came with the start of this challenge.  But I still enjoyed having the workout planned out for me (no taking the easy way out), and I still enjoyed the variety of exercises.  Now if only Kinect could “see” me and follow my movements more regularly.

Am I getting any closer to my goal so far in this challenge?  I’m not sure (we just made our first batch of Christmas cookies, and I bought some eggnog this past weekend).   And tomorrow is yet another rest day for me.  But Wednesday is my weigh-in day, so by then we’ll see how I did this first week of my EA Sports Active 2 challenge.
