When Walden Media’s adaption of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe appeared in 2005, it was preceded by the release of a compilation CD entitled Music Inspired by the Chronicles of Narnia. I guess it would have been hoping too much to expect a music album to be released with each Narnia film. And I know we’ve missed the boat (pun intended) for this release but if anyone was looking for songs for a “Dawn Treader Music” CD, I would like to recommend “What a Trip” by Paul Poulton from his album, Affected. The lyric is reproduced below. If you’d like to know more about Paul, here’s a link to the biog on his website: Paul Poulton Bio
I love the way Paul plays with words. He comes up with some pretty amazing rhymes and it’s fascinating how he lines up his images to lead you from simple everyday things, through difficult things, to thinking about eternity. It’s a bit like what C.S. Lewis does. I’ve heard that Paul is a fan of Lewis and G.K. Chesterton so there might be a bit of inspiration from those directions.
And then there is Paul’s music. It’s so original and the rhythms so infectious, you’ll have to listen to appreciate his skill. Paul kindly granted permission to reproduce the lyric below. He also sent me the links below where you can listen to “What A Trip.” I hope you enjoy it. I wonder if, like me, you think of the closing scenes of The Voyage of The Dawntreader, that beautiful beach and Reepicheep sailing up that wave when you hear it.

What a Trip!
There is a crack in space and time
We’ll all go through it
We’re waiting in line
It’s a bit like a tunnel
I’ve heard it said
Light is shining at the end
And as you float on through
People that you knew
are waiting for youI’ll go through that crack
And up that chimney stack
To the celestial sky
Because sooner or later
I’ve got to step on that escalator
When I lay me down to dieThere is some water
In which we must wade
A rift in the universe
Which some has made
It’s a bit like a river
I’ve heard it said
With a beautiful shore
And preachers teach
I will finally reach
That beautiful beachWhat a trip that will be
When I sail that sea
Into the angelic bay
I will leave this grave
And surf that wave
Into the eternal dayAnd although all my dead friends smile and make a fuss
I’ll be looking for the source of the light that surrounds usThere’s an appointment
That has been made
Some think they’ve escaped it
When it’s just been delayed
You need ticket
I’ve heard it said
Your name must be in the book
And we may look kind of bright
When we’re all clothed in white
Death has lost its biteWhat a trip that will be
When I sail that sea
into the angelic bay
I will leave this grave
And surf that wave
into the eternal dayAnd I’ll go through that crack
And up that chimney stack
To the celestial sky
Because sooner or later
I’ve got to step on that escalator
When I lay me down to dieby Paul Poulton
